As Chief Financial Officer of a large national company, where a good deal of my own time was spent mentoring and coaching the 25 staff within the finance team, you were aware that I was a little skeptical about how external coaching would be of benefit to me.

As you may remember I had agreed to take a retrenchment package in January 2006 after sixteen years of service and this was kept confidentially from most of the organization until my replacement was appointed five months later. Even after this appointment I agreed to stay on until the October to complete certain projects and ensure a smooth handover and as I had developed long standing and strong associations with many of my colleagues, and in particular members of my team, this proved to be a very difficult time for me emotionally.

I am so glad that I decided to take on the coaching, as it was a key factor in my staying motivated and calm during that period.

Our one on one sessions allowed me to remove myself from the turbulence of the day to day and focus on what I wanted to achieve in the short and long term, both from a professional and personal perspective. I felt at all times that anything I had to say would be kept strictly confidential and this allowed me to verbalise how I was feeling emotionally with a “coach” who remained totally objective and just listened. In fact I would have to say that I actually found this provided a calming effect, a “time out” you might say, that allowed me to also remain object because there was no emotional dialogue coming back. I found that after a session, that I felt a sense of well-being that was sustained for a good period of time.

During the early sessions you coached me to develop strategies to meet my goals and these strategies we would revisited and re evaluated each session. I found that these sessions gave me clarity around what were the really important issues and allowed me to clear out the clutter.

I feel that the coaching was of significant benefit to me and must say that I found your coaching style and methodology really worked for me."
